Love Can Work A Miracle

September 28, 2008

If your day is not going that well play this track, put your hands up and start shaking. Taken from 365 day project this song we’ll definately take you somewhere.

Following text by B.C. Sterrett (The Lost Media Archive):
(by the way, you should check his compellingly bizarre tracks)

“I wish I had this record near me as I write these notes. After listening to Otis Fodder’s Christian Musical themed show on Cool and Strange Music’s Friendly Persuasion, I went out in search of similar odd records. The following week or so I found this little gem at the thrift store with the standout cover. I’m only including one track because sadly the rest of the record isn’t as interesting. And it’s long! This is like the Alice’s Restraunt of Christian Musical numbers. And it’s great!

I don’t know what else to say about it, but just wanted to say thank you to Otis Fodder for all the fun, music, and friendship over the years. I think we all owe him a round of applause for sticking out yet another year of 365. Cheers!

Now everyone hit play on your computer,

LOVE! “

Iceberg 2025

September 21, 2008

Iceberg 2025 is an architectural interactive installation proposed to be installed in the heart of the city. This installation is about giving people a different perspective and perception about global warming. We perceive global warming as an issue but we might not be able to experience the affect of it in our time. Perhaps this installation will be able to let people experience and understand the issues we are facing right now. (text by SUPERNATURE)

Self-Sustaining SUPERSTAR

September 21, 2008

A new project by MAD, ‘Superstar: A Mobile China Town’, will be featured in the exhibition ‘Uneternal City’ at the 11th Venice Biennale, curated by Aaron Betsky. The exhibition invites 12 young global architects to suggest interventions into an anonymous suburban area of Rome, which will exploit and represent new spaces and urban fabrics of a Rome of the future. It will be shown in the Arsenale, from 14th September to 23rd November 2008.

MAD’s proposal, ‘The Superstar’, takes the form of a New China Town.

Along with shopping malls, petrol stations and branches of McDonalds, the old China Town renders all of our cities boring and alike. It is nothing more than restaurant streets and fake traditional buildings representing a kitsch image of contemporary China, with no real life inside. It is a historical theme park that poisons the urban space. There must be a shock therapy to remedy this situation.

Superstar:
A Mobile China Town is MAD’s response to the redundant and increasingly out-of-date nature of the contemporary Chinatown. Rather than a sloppy patchwork of poor construction and nostalgia, the Superstar is a fully integrated, coherent , and above all modern upgrade of the 20th century Chinatown model. It’s a place to enjoy, to consume Chinese food, quality goods and culture events; it’s a place to create and to produce, where citizens can use workshops to study, design and realize their ideas.

Equally important to what this neo-community contains is how it operates. Superstar: A Mobile China Town is a benevolent virus that releases unknown energy in between unprincipled changes and principled steadiness. It can land at every corner of the world, exchanging the new Chinese energy with the environment where it stays. It’s self-sustaining: it grows its own food, requires no resources from the host city, and recycles all of its waste; it’s a living place, with authentic Chinese nature, health resorts, sports facilities and drinking water lakes; and it’s a traveling Olympic party, that can journey to the host city every four years There’s even a digital cemetery, to remember the dead. The Superstar is a dream that’s home to 15,000 people: there is no hierarchy, no hyponymy, but a fusion of technology and nature, future and humanity.

The Superstar’s first destination will be the periphery of Rome. The Superstar will provide an unexpected, ever-changing future embedded in the Eternal past.

Welcome to the Superstar, the China Town of today. (text by MAD)

Guy Ben-Ner’s Treehouse Kit

September 16, 2008

“In Treehouse Kit, Ben-Ner offers a hilarious new reading of the myth of Robinson Crusoe and our ready-to-assemble society. The installation consists of two components: a modular, wood sculpture—the tree—and a video in which the artist himself plays Crusoe, complete with his symbolic attributes: a long beard and… blue-flowered Bermuda shorts! Parodying “how-to” videos and the illusion of “building” from a kit, our latter-day Crusoe dismantles the tree and cleverly puts it back together in the form of furniture: a rocking chair, a table, a parasol, a bed. The simultaneous presentation of the two parts (video and sculpture) takes us on a circular journey in which the furniture made from the tree is actually the material from which the tree was created, and so forth.”

Socotra Island (Yemen)

September 5, 2008

Socotra or Soqotra (Arabic سقطرى ; Suquṭra) is a small archipelago of four islands and islets in the Indian Ocean off the coast of the Horn of Africa some 190 nautical miles (220 mi/350 km) south of the Arabian peninsula, belonging to the Republic of Yemen. It has long been a part of the ‘Adan Governorate, but in 2004 became attached to the Hadhramaut Governorate, which is much closer to the island than ‘Adan (although the closest governorate would be Al Mahrah).

Socotra is considered the “jewel” of biodiversity in the Arabian sea. The long geological isolation of the Socotra archipelago and its fierce heat and drought have combined to create a unique and spectacular endemic flora (which may, therefore, be vulnerable to introduced species such as goats and to climate change). Surveys have revealed that more than a third of the 800 or so plant species of Socotra are found nowhere else. Botanists rank the flora of Socotra among the ten most endangered island flora in the world. The archipelago is a site of global importance for biodiversity conservation and a possible center for ecotourism.

One of the most striking of Socotra’s plants is the dragon’s blood tree (Dracaena cinnabari), which is a strange-looking, umbrella-shaped tree. Its red sap was the dragon’s blood of the ancients, sought after as a medicine and a dye. Another unusual plant is Dorstenia gigas.

The island group also has a fairly rich bird fauna, including a few types of endemic birds, such as the Socotra Starling Onychognathus frater, the Socotra Sunbird Nectarinia balfouri, Socotra Sparrow Passer insularis and Socotra Grosbeak Rhynchostruthus socotranus.

As with many isolated island systems, bats are the only mammals native to Socotra. In contrast, the marine biodiversity around Socotra is rich, characterized by a unique mixture of species that have originated in farflung biogeographic regions: the western Indian Ocean, the Red Sea, Arabia, East Africa and the wider Indo-Pacific.

Emotionally Vague Survey

September 5, 2008

Emotionally Vague is a collection of mainly graphical results from a research project that focused on revealing how people feel anger, joy, fear, sadness & love. A simple survey asked 250 participants between the ages of 6 & 75 years from 35 different countries to graphically represent these emotions on a set of human silhouettes. the resulting drawings were compiled in layered Photoshop documents. in addition, participants could express emotions textually or choose appropriate colors. the text results were analyzed on frequency, while the color choices determine a DNA-like frequency pattern.”

Jumpy Jump!

September 5, 2008

Do you want to reach and catch those elevated sweet exotic fruits, win those unfair basketball games, peak over those tall unnecessary walls, have short conversations with flying creatures, or do anything that requires temporary flying?
Powerisers enable their users to run and jump with super human speed and strength.

“Created by Alexander Böck in the early 2000s, Powerbocks were patented as ‘a device for facilitating the locomotion of a person by himself or herself by means of a spring system for removable attachment to both legs of the person, which spring system enables the person, by compression and deflection of at least one spring element, to walk on the ground by jumping step by step.’ In short, elastic, spring-loaded stilts, or kangaroo boots.” (excerpt from Been-Seen)

According to their website: “Powerisers possess a unique fiberglass spring which is loaded with your gravitational potential and kinetic energy! Simply push upon the spring using your weight and the spring pushes back! Poweriser running and jumping stilts will enable you to jump to heights of 5-7 feet and run at speeds of 17-21 mph! A perfect leg training activity!”

POWERISER! Can you imagine one of these in the city? Doing parkour maybe?. Hmmm.

imposter
– a person who makes deceitful pretenses
faker, impostor, pseud, pseudo, role player, sham, shammer, pretender, fraud, fake
beguiler, cheater, deceiver, trickster, slicker, cheat – someone who leads you to believe something that is not true
name dropper
– someone who pretends that famous people are his/her friends
ringer – a contestant entered in a competition under false pretenses

Have a close look at these stamps. Recognize anybody? Tony Clifton (Andy Kaufman’s alter Ego), Frank Abagnale (Catch me if you can!), and John Howard Griffin (Black Like Me) are just 3 of these famous historical imposters. So why are they on a postage stamp? Well, the stamps are fake, and thats the point!

The project “imPOSTer” was created by by Chicago designer TEWZ to honor and remember the most deceitful imposters throughout history by creating fake stamps, and then sending them through the United States postal system. The portraits of DAVID HAMPTON, FERDINAND DEMARA, FRANK ABAGNALE, JOHN HOWARD GRIFFIN, TONY CLIFTON, WILHELM VOIGHT, were all good enough to fool the United States Postal System. (for more information check TEWZ 1)

Frank Abagnale

Frank William Abagnale, Jr. (born April 27, 1948) is an American former check confidence trickster, forger and impostor who, for five years in the 1960s, passed bad checks worth about $2.5 million in 26 countries. During this time, he used at least eight aliases to cash bad checks. Currently he runs Abagnale and Associates, a financial fraud consultancy company. His life story provided the inspiration for the feature film Catch Me if You Can, based on his ghostwritten biography of the same name. (wiki)

Spam + Blogs = SPLOGS (down with the impostors)

September 4, 2008

An impostor or imposter is a person who pretends to be somebody else, often to try to gain financial or social advantages through social engineering, but just as often for purposes of espionage or law enforcement.(wikipedia)

A splog (spam blog) is a fake blog created solely to promote affiliated Web sites, with the intent of skewing search results and artificially boosting traffic. Some splogs are written like long-winded ads for the Web sites they promote; others have no original content, featuring either nonsense or content stolen from authentic Web sites. Splogs include huge numbers of links to the Web sites in question to fool Web crawler s (programs that search the Web for sites to index). The sploggers associate popular search keywords with their pages so that the splog links turn up in blog search results and are sent out as search subscription notifications through e-mail and RSS feeds. (info source)

I recently found out someone “sploging” me and I decided to inform myself about it.
